Chapter 9

Chloe snatched up the phone from her nightstand, thinking it was Won calling. They hardly spoke since his return from Chicago a few days ago and this troubled her. She knew he was dealing with some grave issues, but keeping distance in these situations was no way to build a relationship. Although, his absence had allowed her to get a head start on her business where she secured a space not too far from home and was in the process of getting it ready to open in a month.

When she checked the phone, the number seemed familiar but she couldn’t place it. Reluctantly she answered the call. At first there was muffled voices in the background, prompting her to believe that someone had perhaps butt dialed her number.

She was about to cut the call when a distressed voice came on. “Is this Chloe?”

“Who’s this?”

“It’s Ella, Jewel’s friend.”

“From the club?” Chloe relaxed back against the pillows. “What’s going on?”

“It’s about Jewel, someone attacked her. We’re on our way to the hospital.”

Chloe froze. She could swear that Ella said someone hurt Jewel. “What do you mean, someone attacked Jewel?” she managed to squeak.

“There was so much blood,” the girl on the phone sobbed. “She was shot … or stabbed … I don’t know.”

Chloe cut her short and asked which hospital they were taking her cousin, after which she disconnected the call and called Won while heading to the bathroom. There was no answer after several tries. In frustration, thinking that he was avoiding her calls for some reason, she called Brody, who picked up after three rings.

“Brody, where’s Won?”

“He’s right here.”

“He’s there with you and he’s okay?”

“Yeah, he’s good. You wanna talk to him? I can hand him the phone.”

She couldn’t believe that Won was available and not taking her calls. “You know what, never mind. I’ll take care of my own business.”

Cutting the call before she took out her frustration on the wrong person, she quickly dressed and headed out the door. By the time she was through the front door, her phone rang. It was Brody. She was tempted to ignore the call but Brody was polite and didn’t deserve to be ignored the way Won had been ignoring her.

“Hey Brody, I’m in a bit of a rush.”

“What’s wrong, Babes?” won voice sounded on the other end.

Gritting her teeth, she screeched. “What’s wrong? You’ve been ignoring my calls!”

“I’ve not been ignoring your calls, Chloe. I lost my phone a few days ago. Now tell me where you headed this time of night?”

“Someone assaulted Jewel and I’m headed to the hospital. I’ll deal with you later.”

Lost his phone? That was no excuse. When one loses a cell phone, the most logical thing to do is obtain another. She was still upset that Won didn’t think that when she was unable to reach him, that she might be worried. She knew he was going through a lot with their mission to take down those responsible for his father’s death. However, it appeared that his obsession with revenge took precedence over their newly formed relationship.
